They are called the <span id=\"term167\" data-type=\"term\">null hypothesis<\/span> and the <span id=\"term168\" data-type=\"term\">alternative hypothesis<\/span>. These hypotheses contain opposing viewpoints.<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"element-619\"><em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>0<\/sub><\/em>: <strong>The null hypothesis:<\/strong> It is a statement of no difference between the variables\u2014they are not related. This can often be considered the status quo and as a result if you cannot accept the null it requires some action.<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"element-320\"><em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>: <strong>The alternative hypothesis:<\/strong> It is a claim about the population that is\r\ncontradictory to <em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>0<\/sub><\/em> and what we conclude when we reject <em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>0<\/sub><\/em>. This is usually what the researcher is trying to prove.<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"element-478\">Since the null and alternative hypotheses are contradictory, you must examine evidence to decide if you have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis or not. The evidence is in the form of sample data.<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"element-862\">After you have determined which hypothesis the sample supports, you make a <strong>decision.<\/strong>\r\nThere are two options for a decision. The choice of symbol depends on the wording of the hypothesis test. In this example, it is the Claim because that is where we see the \"\u2264\" (it is read \"less than or equal to\" which is why we say it has the \"equal\" in it). This is what we convert into our null hypothesis <em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>0<\/sub>. So p \u2264 0.30 <\/em>becomes <em data-effect=\"italics\">p<\/em> = 0.30.\r\n<p id=\"element-283\"><strong><em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>0<\/sub><\/em><\/strong>: <em data-effect=\"italics\">p<\/em> = 0.30<\/p>\r\n<span data-type=\"newline\">Looking again at the Claim and Opposite, find the the one that <em>does not<\/em> have an equal sign. In this example, it is the Opposite. This becomes our Alternative Hypothesis.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<strong><em data-effect=\"italics\">H<sub>1<\/sub><\/em><\/strong>: <em data-effect=\"italics\">p<\/em> &gt; 0.30\r\n\r\nIt will become important later on to remember whether the Null Hypothesis or the Alternative Hypothesis came from the Claim, so it is a good practice to associate them somehow. In the table below, I put the Claim and Opposite in the first column.
